Safe Tooth Whitening for West London Patients
Is a whitening procedure without risks?
Having a tooth whitening procedure is becoming fairly common place these days. Perhaps it is the rise of the ‘celebrity smile’ that has encouraged this or perhaps just a general increase in awareness about how we present ourselves to the outside world.
Whilst a tooth whitening procedure is affordable and painless, as well as being highly effective, it has not been without its critics so we thought we would take a look at this issue here.
High Street Tooth Whitening
Because tooth whitening is on the increase, it is also seen as a lucrative and profitable market to enter and there have been a number of shops specialising purely in this procedure appear on high streets throughout the UK and even in West London. Whilst we wouldn’t like to say that all of these are bad, the reality is that the staff working at these centres are unlikely to have had full dental training and may therefore proceed with a procedure when circumstances would make a dentist think twice. The British Dental Association have, in fact, stated that, in their opinion, the risk is increased if this procedure is performed away from a dental surgery.
In fact, the problem has become so serious that EU scientists have recommended that only qualified dentists, dental therapists or dental hygienists should be able to perform tooth whitening procedures when the whitening product contained between 0.1% and 6% of the peroxide whitening agent.
By adhering to this, a patient’s safety is guaranteed as any problems that may prevent the procedure being carried out such as, potentially, receding gums or dental cavities, would be spotted by the dentist beforehand and either treated or, if the patient did not want this, the tooth whitening procedure may not go ahead. The fact is that only trained dental staff are able to determine a patient’s condition satisfactorily.
Some people also opt for kits that enable the person to whiten their teeth at home but these are not without their risks. Even the best of these can lead to burns of the soft tissue if not applied correctly and purchasing from the internet can be even riskier; in 2012, a supplier of tooth whitening kits was jailed after it was revealed that the peroxide level was 100 times over the safety limit!
